Who are the Rates assessors?

St Lawrence requires a team of 5 Rates Assessors. They are not employees but nominated and elected by the Parish at an assembly for a term of 3 years, and must be on the electoral register for the Parish.

What do the Rates Assessors do?

The Rates Assessors meet regularly between January and June each year, generally twice a week for 2 hours. They review the rates returns from each property in the Parish and, where necessary, make a new assessment of land to ensure that it is in line with similar land both in the Parish and across the Island. It may be required to put in extra hours in order to meet the deadline or inspect a property out of the usual meeting times.

The work is interesting and at times challenging, with the opportunity to learn about places and buildings in the Parish that they might not otherwise be aware of.
